Does PR Help Your Business Show Up In AI Search?

Spoiler alert: YES! Strategic public relations can help your business become more cited in AI search.

But if you’ve used PR in the past to support traditional SEO (search engine optimization), there’s a little more to the story when it comes to getting AI to suggest your business as an answer to someone’s question.

AI search tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude pull information from across the web to generate answers. Earned media coverage, like a quote in a national news outlet or a mention in a credible industry publication, can help establish your business as a recognizable and authoritative source just as it works in an SEO strategy.

This about it like this:

→ The media outlet quoting you and linking back to you are like the cool kids in high school. If they ask you to sit with them at lunch, you are now cool by association. It’s similar to earned media’s impact on SEO and AEO (answer engine optimization.)

BUT… (you knew that was coming, right?) simply getting coverage doesn’t guarantee that your business will appear in AI-generated answers.

So, what makes strategic PR valuable in the age of AI search? It comes down to two things: authority and visibility.

Why Brand Authority Matters in AI Search

You can talk about how great your business is all day long and have all the evidence (aka clients, results, and portfolios) to back it up. But when someone else verifies you are awesome, it carries a different kind of weight. This is why referrals and testimonials are often what tips the scales from someone researching you and deciding to hire you.

Those endorsements add to your brand’s authority, which leads to citations. AI search systems often pull information from multiple sources when generating answers. When your business shows up consistently across credible, independent sources it creates more opportunities for AI to discover and corroborate information about who you are and what you do.

In other words, your reputation extends well beyond your own website and social media channels. And that’s exactly why PR deserves a place in the AI search conversation.

How PR Helps Build Visibility in AI Search

Authority is important, but AI also needs to be able to find information about your business.

That’s where a thoughtful PR strategy can make a difference. Here are three ways:

Earned Media Coverage

We’re talking articles, interviews and quotes in reputable publications from industry news outlets to business and national media.

Every relevant piece of coverage creates another opportunity for your business to be discovered, referenced or cited. And no, you don’t have to land a mention in The New York Times for it to count.

A well-placed quote in an industry publication can be just as relevant to the people (and AI searches) you’re trying to reach. The key is showing up where your target audience spends their time reading and engaging.

Public Speaking and Thought Leadership

Have a perspective worth sharing? Let’s package it up and get you a microphone to share it from.

The best way to go from “someone with an opinion” to “a thought leader in [INSERT INDUSTRY]” is to take your perspective and share it repeatedly via speaking engagements. From being a guest on podcasts to hosting breakout sessions and even a keynote address at your target industry conference, these all help shape you into a thought leader.

Begin by sharing your perspectives on your social media with videos and talk-to-camera style Reels. This begins building your platform and perspective. It’s also a great way to get practice in front of a camera.

Then package up your opinions (i.e. the topics you could talk about all day long and six ways from Sunday) into a signature keynote address or a series of breakout sessions, one on each topic. Pitch these to podcasters, event organizers, and social accounts doing live streams. More face time leads to more authority building.

(Note: This is also something a great publicist can do for you while you focus on refining your expertise and building your business.)

Consistent Brand Mentions

One article is a great start. A consistent presence across a variety of relevant sources? Even better.

When independent publications describe your business, services and expertise in similar ways either through citations of your quotes or full features, there’s more information available for AI systems to piece together an accurate picture of what you do.

This is why a truly effective PR strategy can take months to see traction in AI results. Yes you can get some quick wins with a quote here or there in one or two months, but interviews now often lead to published articles multiple months down the line. Effective PR will balance the quick wins and the long-term goals.

One important caveat: Not all third party citations or backlinks carry the same value, and brand mentions aren’t a guaranteed ticket into being cited in AI-generated answers.

Relevance, credibility and context matter more than just racking up mentions on any third-party site.

What Makes a PR Strategy More Effective for AI Visibility?

Okay, so PR can support your visibility in AI search. Now what?

Before you start pitching every publication under the sun, consider these three priorities:

1. Prioritize relevance over reach. Seek out coverage in publications that matter to your industry and audience. A smaller, highly relevant outlet may be more valuable than a big-name publication with no real connection to your business. Don’t chase exposure just for the sake of exposure.

2. Lead with genuine expertise. Bring something useful to the conversation. Original research, informed opinions and unique perspectives give journalists and other sources a reason to reference you instead of someone else.

3. Keep your messaging consistent. Your website, media coverage and other digital touchpoints should tell the same story about who you are, what you do and why it matters.

If your messaging is all over the place, you’re not making it any easier for AI (or your customers) to understand your business.

And here’s something we cannot stress enough: PR is not a magic pill to AI authority.

The best opportunities come when your PR efforts support a larger marketing strategy. If you’re still figuring out your positioning or struggling to articulate what makes your business different, that needs to be addressed first.

PR and AEO Work Better Together

The content on your own website absolutely matters for AI search. But what other credible sources say about your business can help AI systems discover, understand and potentially reference it, too.

PR needs to work hand-in-hand with your content marketing efforts to consistently build your brand authority over time. PR helps establish your presence and credibility beyond your own channels. Content marketing factoring in AEO helps make your content easier for AI search tools to find and use.

Being the answer starts with becoming a source worth referencing.
